Cervical Cancer VS. Shitake mushrooms……. I would take the mushrooms:)
A study was just presented by UT Health at the Society of Gynecological Oncology meeting in Tampa that showed that AHCC (extract from Shitake Mushrooms) could eradicate the human papillomavirus (HPV) in mice. They expected a reduction in the infection but not complete eradication. They were in such disbelief at this amazing result that they repeated the experiment the second time at their own cost and confirmed their findings! This is a very impactful finding because according to the National Cancer Institute of the NIH (http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/HPV):
1. HPV is responsible for 95% of cervical cancers, 85% of anal cancers, 50% of vaginal, vulvar & penile cancers and some throat/tongue (“oropharyngeal”) cancers (by 2020, HPV is projected to cause more oropharyngeal cancers than cervical cancers in the United States).
2. At any point in time, 42.5% of women have genital HPV infections.
3. “There is currently no medical treatment for HPV infections” – this is a direct quote from the NIH website above. There are vaccines for prevention (which as you may know, have been very controversial) but there is no treatment.
4. Women who are diagnosed are simply asked to come in for annual pap smear to detect cervical cancer.
A big thank you to Jonathan at Nutrition Dynamics for passing along this exciting research. So you can imagine the impact of being able to eradicate the HPV infection and we now have data that AHCC can do this.
