What are S.M.A.R.T. Goals?

Ready to achieve your goals in 2021?! S.M.A.R.T. goals was designed to break down large goals into more achievable steps while still working toward the end result.


Creating a SPECIFIC goal such as “I will lose 10 pounds by March 31st of 2021” instead of “I want to lose weight” establishes a clear vision of what is to be accomplished.

Continuing with the above example of weight loss, this goal is MEASURABLE by tracking pounds lost, inches lost, muscle gained, etc. Next, decide what tactics will be used to make your specific goal ATTAINABLE. For instance, what types of exercises will be beneficial, how many days per week for how many minutes will you exercise, what kind of food will need to be purchased and prepared, and how will accountability be conducted?

Is losing 10 pounds by March 31st by applying the above tactics REALISTIC? Let’s dissect the answer! Yes, it is realistic, however is the plan for each day, week, and month also realistic to achieve? Don’t forget to identify potential obstacles and how each will be managed. Think about long term results or benefits. How will losing 10 pounds affect overall health, sleep, pressure on joints, etc?

The final step to a S.M.A.R.T. goal is to make it TIME-BOUND. Be intentional about the time set to achieve your vision. For example, “I want to lose 10 pounds by the end of the week” isn’t practical.
